We Made It!

Whew! We made it through St. Patrick’s Day! Quite a high-tempo couple of days. On Tuesday the 16th we were the first band to ever play the BRAND-NEW Kieran’s Irish Pub location in downtown Minneapolis, AND THEN we had three gigs on St. Patrick’s Day itself! By the end I was… beat. It was a hell of a lot of fun though. The new Kieran’s is pretty impressive! Here’s a pic I took from the stage:

New Kierans from Stage

Not the greatest pic but I hope it conveys the sheer size of the place! It was really cool to play on that stage–they’ve really done a great job with the sound system and the lighting rig–definitely not your typical pub set up. Geno, Cody and I had a great night!

On SPD Geno and I did a lunchtime gig at Jake O’Connor’s out in Excelsior, MN. People weren’t really quite ready to party yet but it was a good chance to get things loose for the rest of the night ahead. I was really worried about my voice because I had been sick the week before and of course everything was draining right into my sinuses on the big day. I don’t like to complain but I actually had a pretty tough go of it at Jake’s and was thus kinda nervous for the rest of the shows. It’s not fun for anyone if the singer in the band is no good. I was pounding the hot water and lemon, and I think that helped a bit. By the time we were done at Jake’s I was feeling better.

Next up was O’Donovan’s, and we had a great time because our time slot of 5-8pm was really a good one; people were getting off work and starting to get into the spirit. By 8pm we really had them going–it was great.

We didn’t get to hang out with anyone of course, as we had to run to our next show–our full band set at O’Gara’s. I really have to doff my hat to our road crew of Michael Gibbons and Mike Korstad, as without them we never would have been able to eat, get on stage at each venue on time, etc. Thanks for all the help and hard work guys!

When we got to O’Gara’s, I was kind of shocked… The place was REALLY empty. There were maybe 40 people in this big room that holds 400+. That is a pretty small number, and I was thinking to myself, “what have we gotten into here?”. There was a cover band on stage playing songs from such seminal Irish artists as Poison, Journey and Young MC. WTF?

Anyway needless to say I didn’t really think good things when we took the stage but BOY was I wrong! I think the place was pretty much PACKED about 15 minutes into our first set–I heard later that they had a line outside the bar because the room was at capacity and they weren’t letting anyone else in. Nice. I’ll take that every time! We really rocked and had a fantastic time. There was so much energy onstage, it was as though the eight hours I had already been singing that day didn’t really happen. I felt really strong vocally and gave it my all. The next day I paid for it of course, but it was all worth it!

This weekend Geno and I will be at McNally’s in Sioux Falls, SD. We’ve played there a couple of times now and the shows are getting better and better so I am looking forward to it. After SPD, I figure we can handle it. Hope everyone has a great weekend!

We’re Headed To Ireland! Want to Come Along?

airplane1rgb Wild Colonial Bhoys are excited to announce that we have booked a tour of Ireland!

In conjunction with Celtic Journeys Travel Company, we will be headed to the Emerald Isle, the Auld Sod, Me Fadder’s Homeland, Etc., for a week-long journey of music, mayhem, craic, food, sight-seeing, friendship, and possibly a pint or two of the black. Other bands in our genre (The Young Dubliners, The Elders, Flogging Molly) do these tours all the time, and we are honored to be joining that list!

Even better, YOU CAN COME WITH US! This is a pretty-much-most-of-your-expenses-covered-for-just-one-low-price kind of tour! We are hoping to get as many WCB Fhans as possible to come along and see Ireland with us by bus. You’ll get to see us play gigs in some of Ireland’s best nightlife spots, as well as all the other great stuff too. Here are the details:

November 6-13, 2010

* Special limited edition WCB Ireland Tour T-shirt and backstage pass laminate

For those of you who have been to Ireland, you know how great an itinerary this is! For those of you who have never been, this is your chance to not only see Ireland but to enjoy the experience with us and to take the trip of a lifetime.

Think about it… for under $800 you’ll have pretty much every major expense covered–accommodation and travel expenses while in Ireland, breakfast every morning and dinner five of the seven nights, and entertainment! That is a serious bargain. Pretty much all you’ll be spending there is money on drink. Plus if you book your airfare now, you can get it pretty reasonably! A recent search on Priceline.com returned airfare from Chicago to Dublin for under $600! And probably most importantly, OUR TOUR IS CHEAPER THAN ANY OF THE OTHER BAND TOURS…

So by now we’re sure you’re asking yourself… “HOW DO I SIGN UP?!?!” Well, here’s the info:

Contact Maria at Celtic Journeys via email, or call her at 651-291-8003. It’s that simple! She’s a great lady and will take care of you. Contact her ASAP and book your ticket, because at this price they are going to go fast! Again, the Celtic Journeys website is WWW.CELTIC-JOURNEYS.COM.

First Day of Spring?

Hey everybody!  Sorry I’ve been incognito lately.  Been busy with gigs, traveling, and I’ve been trying to sell my house (knock on wood).

It’s the first day of Spring and we have 4″ of snow on the ground outside my apartmet in Kansas City.  ???

We’ve had some ups and some downs recently.  By now you’ve all heard that we lost our great friend, Fitz.  He left some big shoes to fill.  Everyone in the Twin Cities Irish community will have to work a little harder just to make up a fraction of what Fitz did on his own.   Fitz, you are missed by all.

Here’s a quick story of the people who decided to by my house…  I’ve had a For Sale sign in my window for too long now.  Out of the blue I got a call from an interested buyer.  She indicated that she had been looking at a lot of places in my neighborhood.  Still, she was interested in taking a look and she had a few questions.

 ”Are you the original owner?”

“Yes.”

“Do you smoke?”

“No.”

“You’re white, right?”

After a long pause I gave an even longer reply, “Uuuuummmmmmmmmmm…”

“Oh my goodness!  I mean your house!  Your house is white, right?”

Phew!  “Yes, it’s white.”  We had a good laugh about it but, needless to say, she was still embarrassed.  But it was for the best as she and her husband are planning on buying my house.  It’ll be nice to get rid of the extra expense each month.  All’s well that ends well!

Something From the “Dumbest Thing Ever” File…

K, so I was just perusing our local fishwrap’s (Minneapolis Star Tribune) website, and for some reason I was drawn to this article, which apparently tells the tale of “actress” and professional socialite and partier Lindsay Lohan and her lawsuit against those E Trade commercials with the talking babies.

I just had to write about it because frankly I think those ads are hilarious and Lindsay, I hate to tell you this but I never ONCE thought of you when I watched it. The idea that you think you’re like Madonna or Sting is pretty laughable.

But a decent idea. I think I’m dropping the last name and just going by “Adam” from now on…

Big Tim Fitzgerald

Hey everyone…

Here is a video of a new song the Bhoys wrote in memory of Fitz. The quality isn’t great but we wanted to get it out there for you to see. Adam, Geno and Cody will be recording the song “for real” later this week, and we’ll get audio up on the site as soon as it’s done for you to download for free.

We hope you enjoy, and God bless you, Fitz. Slan go foill.

A Legend Has Passed…

The Twin Cities has lost a giant. Tim Fitzgerald was one of the most valued and respected members of the Irish community not just here in town but all over America and even in Ireland itself. People knew him everywhere and loved him for his humor, his talent as a singer and piper, his selfless sacrifice for the good of the community, and the can-do spirit that few will be able to replicate.

Fitz was always there to help; his many years at Kieran’s Pub in Minneapolis put him at the center of the goings-on in the Twin Cities Irish scene. If you needed a gig he’d give you one. If you needed help moving furniture he’d bring his truck. If you needed a bagpiper at a wedding or a funeral, your first call was to Fitz.

His are giant shoes to fill, in so many ways. He was so jolly and giving and kind. He was always there to help WCB, and for that we are eternally grateful. It was always amazing to think that a man of his standing in the community, this high profile, popular figure, would always give his time to help us. Who were we? Nobodies, and yet he was always there to help us along.

Thank you Fitz! We will miss you dearly. Heaven is certainly a happy place right now, for you are there singing “the Old Triangle” and “the Parting Glass” and of course your showpiece, “Isn’t it Grand Boys”. It’s grand indeed, Fitz. And so are you.

“Look at the coffin, with golden handles
Isn’t it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let’s not have a sniffle, let’s have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you’ll bloody-well die

Look at the flowers, all bloody withered
Isn’t it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let’s not have a sniffle, let’s have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you’ll bloody-well die

Look at the mourners, bloody-great hypocrites
Isn’t it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let’s not have a sniffle, let’s have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you’ll bloody-well die

Look at the preacher, a bloody-nice fellow
Isn’t it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let’s not have a sniffle, let’s have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you’ll bloody-well die

Look at the widow, bloody-great female
Isn’t it grand, boys, to be bloody-well dead?

Let’s not have a sniffle, let’s have a bloody-good cry
And always remember: The longer you live
The sooner you’ll bloody-well die”

Sigh…

Sidney-Crosby I can tell you all, it is VERY tough being an American fan of the Pittsburgh Penguins today. Sid, I love ya but you broke my heart yesterday. Watching that hockey game was one of the most entertaining sports experiences I have had–until the very end that is.

Congrats to Canada on a phenomenal game and a great win. They tried to give it to us a few times but the US just wouldn’t take it I guess. I have to admit that when we went to overtime, I said to myself “we are GOING to win this game! The stars are all lined up for us.” I guess not. As he has done so many times FOR my team, Sid the Kid proved that he’s the best player in hockey by answering the bell in a big game (for you Ovechkin fans, he’s a great player but you just can’t beat Sidney Crosby when it comes to playing under pressure. Can’t say that about Alex). This time it was against us, so now I know what it feels like to be a Wings fan or a Caps fan. I guess I should say I should be glad he’s a Pen, but to be honest it’s a little early for that. Not today.

Ah well, what can you do? Going into the game, we had nothing to lose and everything to gain–Team USA wasn’t supposed to get that far, and the big matchup for gold was supposed to be Canada/Russia. We were seeded 6th out of 12, and no one gave us much chance. Canada on the other hand was playing under so much pressure it was a lose-lose situation for them. Even winning the gold would garner nothing more for them than sighs of relief from their countrymen. They won and that was expected, even though they just did so BARELY. But, it’s a game of inches like anything else and they are the champs. Geno was happy last night at the Dub, decked out in full Canada regalia, so that was fun to see. If I was so sad at least he was happy.

God this is starting to sound so depressing! Gonna take me awhile to process this one…

I am looking forward to a full week though! I’m playing my solo gig at the Dubliner tomorrow night, Geno and I leave for a swing through Des Moines and Kansas City on Thursday, returning Sunday for a show at the Dub with Cody. If last night’s performance and crowd are any indication, that one’s gonna rock! We really had a great time last night. Helped get my mind off hockey for a little while.

Later Gators!
